ISO 8583 payments Business Analysis

The Business Analysis (BA) phase is critical before any ISO 8583 testing begins, as it defines what needs to be built and how it will be verified. For our payments project, the primary goal will be to translate business needs and network specifications into clear, testable, and actionable requirements.

Objectives of Business Analysis Before ISO 8583 Testing

Establish Scope & Vision in testing

We will define the exact scope of the ISO 8583 integration — which message types (e.g., Authorization, Financial, Reversal) and exactly what specific data elements are in scope, and what transactions they support.

Precise Technical Requirements

We will Analyze the exact variant of ISO 8583 (e.g., 1987, 1993, 2003, or a proprietary scheme variation) and map all mandatory and conditional Data Elements (DEs), including their format, length, and usage rules.

Assess Testing Scope

Check the logic that governs transaction processing, such as checks, calculations, response code mapping, and time-out handling.

Develop Test Cases

Create the foundational requirements, use cases, acceptance criteria that QA/Testing teams will use, design and execute test cases.

Ensure Compliance to scheme and internal procedures

Verify that the proposed implementation adheres to all relevant card scheme (Visa/Mastercard) and regulatory compliance standards before development or testing, validating internal process and procedures in the organization.

ISO8583 Functional Testing

Objective: To verify that the system correctly constructs, parses, and processes all required ISO 8583 message types (e.g., Authorization Request, Financial Request, Reversal, various administrative messages) and their data elements according to the agreed-upon specification (which is often a variant of the base ISO 8583 standard).

Complete ISO 8583 Specification/Guide

The Specifications Document is a primary prerequisite when testing specific ISO8583 flavours, it is a detailed document outlining the Message Type Indicators (MTIs), required Data Elements (DEs), field formats, and valid code values.

ISO8583 Message Construction

The ISO8583 message will be manually or automatically set up according to the Specifications document, and the ISO8583 Simulator will automatically create valid request messages for all defined scenarios (e.g., purchase, refund, balance inquiry).

Correct Message Formatting

The naPay ISO8583 simulator will automatically generate the correct ISO8583 message, and the system under test generates ISO 8583 response messages that adhere to all field definitions, lengths, and formats

The neaPay simulator and all the other systems (simulators, host, terminal) are set up in this environment for sending and receiving messages.

Transaction Execution

Manually or automatically, the simulator will send request messages to the system under test, and receive the responses for assessment.

Correct Response Generation

The system under test processes the request and generates a valid ISO 8583 response (e.g., MTI 0110 for an Authorization Request 0100) with the correct Response Code (DE 39). The ISO8583 simulator will read the response, assess if valid or not, log the details and gnerate Anlytics reports.

ISO8583 Test Cases

As part of the test scope, defined scenarios covering all message types, positive and negative flows, and specific field requirements will be executed with the ISO8583 simulator.

Automatic Validation and Verification

Verication of the received response message, checking the MTI, Bitmap, and all populated Data Elements against the expected values is done automatically, with human supervision.

Accurate ISO8583 Message Processing

The test system is also checked, manually usually, that transaction data is correctly logged, system state is updated (e.g., a hold is placed on an account for an authorization), and all business rules are correctly applied.

ISO8583 Integration Testing

Objective To verify the seamless flow of ISO 8583 transactions between two or more interacting systems like a terminal/acquirer system and a processing host, a processor and a network/issuer simulator, a fraud and switch system, a bridge between two system updating.

System Connectivity stable

Secure and stable network connection (e.g., TCP/IP leased line, VPN) established between the systems being integrated is a very important prerequisite. If this is not met, then no ISO8583 testing can be done correctly.

End-to-End ISO8583 Flow

Execute full ISO8583 transaction cycles, starting from the point of origin (e.g., POS terminal) to the final destination (e.g., issuer host) and back. Alternatively, isolate each components and test it in isolation with simulators

Payment systems Interoperability

ISO8583 Systems can reliably connect, exchange keys (if required), and successfully send and receive messages from one another via secure connections, on the protocol in scope (ISO8583 flavour).

Interface Specifications must be followed

Exact same document of the ISO8583 message format and protocol deviations used by both parties. The smallest difference in the ISO8583 protocol may lead to invalid tests.

Message Tracing and logging

The neaPay ISO8583 Simualtor will check the messages to ensure they are correctly sent and received, but on the way, more checks may be neded in interconnecting systems.

Successful Network management

neaPay ISO8583 simualtor handles out of the box administrative messages like Sign-On and Cut-over (network reconciliation) and ensures they are correctly handled.

Security with Certificate and Key Exchange

the neaPay ISO8583 simulator supports all encryption or secure sessions (e.g., SSL/TLS) used in card processing, security artifacts must be available and configured correctly (certificates and keys).

Errors, Repeats, Time-out Handling

Intentionally introduced error messages, message repeats, invalid combinations, connection drops or delayed responses to verify that systems handle retries and reversals correctly.

Corect and Consistent Error Handling

Both systems correctly interpret and respond to specific transaction and system error codes (DE 39) consistenly in various situations, even when recovering from error situations.

ISO8583 Regression Testing

Objective To ensure that new changes, fixes, or updates to the system's ISO 8583 implementation have not broken existing, previously working functionality.
